2022 - the Club's 15th Anniversary

This year, things gradually started to return to normal; we gained a few more members, picked up our juniors coaching programme and started a weekly Squash Wales Academy Squad at the Club; we also began to make some important changes in and around the Club.

Club's 2022 AGM

Our AGM as held on 26 May. Up for consideration was the latest position on our Third Court aspiration, we looked at the continued impact of the COVID pandemic, the level of subscriptions and light card fees for the following 12 months, as well as the election of officers for 2022-23.

For both the annual subscriptions and light card fees, they remained unchanged.

Note of 2022 AGM

Members Subscriptions for 2022-23 due from 1st June.

The followed rates were agreed:-

For Renewals:

* Seniors - £80.
* Juniors / Students - £30
* Family - £100.

For New Members:

* Seniors - £90.
* Juniors / Students - £40
* Family - £110.

Light Cards would remain at £3-00 per 45 minute session.

Some highlights from 2022 ...

Third Court

The AGM gave careful consideration to the matter of a Third Court at the Club; this had been an aspiration for many years, with managed savings accrued.

We lost around half of our membership and our court bookings greatly declined following the pandemic; this, together with a steep rise in the cost of building materials, not to mention the financial costs already incured, plus the time and energy spent by some Committee members, the time had come to make a firm decision.

On all counts, the AGM agreed that any current planning and investigation works towards a Third Court be suspended, indefinitely.

2021 Club Championships

Late into the year, our 2021 Club Championships took place on 11 December with the Main Final played between defending Champion, Jonathan Davies and Tim Arthur.

A superb Championship Final produced a very strong performance from Tim who took the match by 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-8).

A celebration of Twenty Years !

In April we celebrated 20 Years since Wrexham Squash became formalised.

Fundamental to this had been two coaches Mark Davies and Jim Tunley; both have played a crucial part in the development and transition of Wrexham Squash through to establishing the Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club in 2007.

Check out our History Page for the full story on how the sport of squash in Wrexham has continued to change and develop.

Some big changes at the Club ...

During July / August we started some maintenance and aesthetic changes around the Squash Club.

During this off-season, work continued to upgrade many aspects of the Club and it had also been our intention that essential maintenance to both courts would have been completed ahead of the season starting in September (in the event our contractor could not meet this deadline).

Work in progress ...

Work commenced towards the end of July to refresh and upgrade the Squash Club started in July with thanks to our contractors and all of those volunteers who stayed behind after their game to assist with the scaffold.

Kilimanjaro challenge for Club members

Congratulations to two of our members, Sian Hughes and Helen Massey on taking on Mount Kilimanjaro in September.

Sian and Helen climbed and reached Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. They undertook the brilliant challenge to raise funds for the Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham. It was a 7 day trek and only 18 of the 21 size group made it to the Uhuru Peak (Sian was pleased to say that she's the eldest); Helen and Sian fared better than some of the team, who became quite nauseous and had to be given oxygen - playing squash over the years certainly helped with the fitness required.
Their Summit Day started 12am and it took some 8 hours 30 minutes to reach the top, where temp was -16 degrees.

Please support the Kili Challenge

Masters Regional Event at Club

On behalf of Squash Wales, the Squash Club had agreed to host a Squash Wales Regional Masters Event on 21 - 23 October and encouraged all our members to give it their support.

The event was part of the Squash Wales Masters Circuit 2022-23 and split the competition into different age categories. On 14 October, however, Squash Wales took the decision to postpone this event due to a lack of entries; they were to try again next year!

Court booking times aligned

With effect from 11 October the Club's court booking times were aligned back to the pre-pandemic arrangements; having been altered to assist social distancing protocols.

New signage at the Club

As part of our general uplift of the Club and its facilities, to assist our visiting Club Teams, new members and guests, new signage to the Squash Club was installed on 19 October.

Big thanks to Hannah Davies for organising this work.

We were fortunate to have much needed sponsorship of our Teams from The Educate Group.

It was particularly welcome in the 2022-23 Season, our first ever in the top Division of the North West Counties League.

New Season, some new players

In September, a new season and a new chapter began with our First Team playing Division One in the North West Counties .

To help give it our best shot, we've recruited two new players, Welsh Internationals - Owain Taylor and Rhys Evans - members had an opportunity to meet them both and see them on court at an informal evening session at the Club on 1st September.

New season warm-up

Looking forward to a new season in the North West Counties Leagues, a Club Night on 1 September welcomed Owain Taylor and Rhys Evans to the Club, with some of their new team mates in 2022-23.

STRONG START FOR THIRDS - played two, won two, was the excellent start to a new Season for our Third Team in Division 3 SW, led by our young Team Captain, Jamie Silvester.

Our Third Team

We wish him well ... - the Third Team had a convincing 5-0 win against Winsford 1 at the Club on 13 October, but best wishes for a speedy recovery to Winsford player Andrew Morley who fell during his match with Alasdair Blundell to dislocate a shoulder.

It was a great night, despite the result ! - Our First Team hosted top of the table Warrington 1 on 22 November, with a packed gallery and some top, top squash.

Juniors match up with Moreton Hall

To help give them all a new experience in their squash skills development, we arranged a "match" between some of the Club's Juniors and Boys from Moreton Hall School on 12 February.

All were Year 7 pupils and most had not played in this type of situation before; it was useful also for members of the Coaching Team to see how each performed and understand where the emphasis should be for future coaching sessions. Well played everyone.

Since January, both Tom and Alasdair have stood in for the regular Coach, Jim, as he recovers from a hip replacement operation.

The continuation of a Junior Programme is an imperative to any Club going forward, but the work of our volunteers is crucial in this; huge thanks to you both.
